Thanksgiving ice cream pies available for pre-order.

Thanksgiving ice cream pies available for pre-order.

In my family pie is king on Thanksgiving.

So, it was just a matter of time before we worked our Lake Effect magic on the traditional Thanksgiving pie. And that time is now. We're proud to announce our 2016 Thanksgiving ice cream pies are now available for pre-order.

We created three different flavors to choose from…

The first pie was a must. A pumpkin ice cream pie in a graham cracker crust, topped with dollops of sweet cream and dusted with cinnamon sugar.

The second is a Peanut Butter Epiphany ice cream pie in an Oreo pie crust, topped with a layer of fudge and lattice peanut butter ribbons on top.

The third is a lemon cream ice cream pie in a graham cracker crust, topped with whipped and toasted marshmallow topping.

We will be stocking some at our shop but to make sure that you get what you want, we highly recommend pre-ordering them.

Each pie costs $15 or if you are feeling adventurous $40 for all 3!

Stop by or call our shop at 201-1643 during business hours, or email your order to cakes@lakeeffecticecream.com.

We will be taking orders until November 18th and the pies will be available for pickup on November 21st-23rd during regular business hours, at our shop on Canal Street.

Pie orders will not be available for pickup on Thanksgiving as Lake Effect will be closed, and you should be at home stuffed with turkey and ice cream pies.

Warm Front Floats

Warm Front Floats

I can't wait anymore.

This post is a little longer than usual, but totally worth it. This Friday, we'll start serving our new hot chocolate and cider Warm Front Foats.

We took the time to try to re-invent the way you drink hot chocolate and cider. Here's what we did.

We created four new specialty drinks: two hot chocolate drinks and two cider drinks. Today, I'll introduce the first cider drink, The Apple Caramel Crackle. The other three we'll announced before this Friday.

First, we ditched the traditional hot cup you're used to as they just couldn't hold what we needed. We took inspiration from my family's summer trip to Quebec where my daughter ordered a large hot chocolate and it came in a bowl, a freaking bowl of hot chocolate. So we chose a wide-mouthed soup cup to let us have a much bigger surface area in the cup, but still allow to you pick it up and drink it.

Second, we changed the spoon to a larger Chinese style soup spoon so you can get much more in the spoon. Trust us, you're going to need it.

Third, we wanted our new drinks to be fun and adjustable to what you like. We include a bunch of added treats so you can add them to your drink as much as you want. Or just eat them on their own.

Our first Warm Front Float, The Apple Caramel Crackle, starts with a scoop of our Salty Caramel ice cream and then we cover it in local hot cider. We top it with real whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce. This is usually where people stop, but not us, there's more.

We then put the cup on a plate and, on the plate, we add a shot of salted caramel sauce, two cinnamon crisps from Elm Street Bakery for dunking and a pack of apple Pop Rocks to add a little crackle.

We've been waiting patiently for the weather to get a bit colder to announce these amazing new items at Lake Effect.

We'll launch our new Warm Front Floats this coming Friday, October 21st.

Open all year

Open all year

Although it doesn't feel like it, summer is slowly slipping away. Usually we change our shop hours to "fall hours" around this time of the year when school starts back up and we are open less.

Well, what if this year we didn't do that?

As a matter of fact, what if this year we didn't close for the winter? What if we just said screw it and stayed open? What if we started offering awesome new hot chocolates and some winter sundaes? What if we sold our famous ice cream cakes all season so those of you with birthdays in the off season weren't left out? What if you could come to Lake Effect during the winter holidays? What if we added a whole new ice cream category for winter flavors?

That's a lot of what if's...

And here's the last one. What if all I said above was true?

Because it is!

The Lake Effect Ice Cream shop in Lockport is going to stay open much longer. We're going to do some amazing things this winter, so be ready.

Our name is Lake Effect, after all.

Mother's Day cakes

Mother's Day cakes

Tonight at midnight is the deadline for pre-orders of our Mother’s Day ice cream cakes. This is your last chance to order one in time for Mom’s Day!

There are 2 cakes to choose from…

Our traditional Mother's Day cake is a layer of our House Chocolate ice cream and a layer of our Silver Cloud Vanilla ice cream. The ice cream is separated by a band of chocolate fudge crunch. Finished with a three tier frosting design of white, pink and purple swirls.

The Chocolate Overload cake is two layers of our Chocolate Overload ice cream packed with dark, milk and white chocolate pieces. Between the two layers is a chocolate crunch and a double fudge layer. The outside edge of the cake is then dusted with chocolate and topped with a vanilla frosting.

Both cakes are available in 6 inch ($25) and 9 inch ($37)

ONE MORE THING! Keep an eye out here for an exciting announcement about our cakes this weekend.

I wish I could announce it now, but I need to wait just a few more days… and trust me, I hate waiting.

Black Sesame is here!

Black Sesame is here!

There are many flavors that I want to make, but this is one I've been thinking about for years.

I can't remember where I first tried it, but the flavor made a lasting impression on me. Not to mention that the ice cream was almost black in color, which I thought was amazingly cool. It took me a long time to get the recipe right and I am proud to announce that it is finally ready. Today we welcome our new Black Sesame ice cream at Lake Effect.

This new flavor has a kind of slightly sweet nuttiness that is both deep and exotic. It's like no ice cream that you've ever had and we'll have it for a limited time only at our scoop shop on Canal Street.

Try it before it's gone!

Valentine's Day pre-order ice cream!

Valentine's Day pre-order ice cream!

We have an exciting announcement that may help you with your Valentine’s Day shopping this year.

It’s time to bring out the sexy ice cream.

In the Mood
-We took Fiegel Apiaries local honey and spices then blended it with juicy plums to create this smooth sherbet. Spicy and sultry.

Bordeaux Wine Chocolate Covered Cherry
-We have to make a wine ice cream on Valentine’s Day. This sweet Bordeaux wine ice cream is blended with Bordeaux cherries and finished with dark chocolate flakes swirled throughout.

Better Than Sex
-There’s a rumor out there that some people think chocolate is better than sex. We’ll let you decide. We brought back our Omanhene chocolate ice cream and blended it with milk chocolate pieces by local bean-to-bar chocolate maker Dark Forest Chocolate. We then added Callibaut white chocolate callets, chocolate brownie chunks and decadent house-made chocolate fudge. Is it hot in here or is it just the chocolate?

Paula’s Red Velvet Donut
-What says “I love you” or maybe even “I love me” better than Paula’s red velvet donuts swirled with a donut glaze and blended into our rich Silver Cloud vanilla ice cream. Simple and perfect.

Valentine’s Day Ice Cream Cakes

Six inch Paula’s Red Velvet Donut ice cream cake
-A layer of our house chocolate ice cream topped with red velvet donuts and white chocolate sauce. Then a layer of our Paula’s red velvet donut ice cream, topped with a sweet cream frosting and red velvet donut halves.

Six inch Chocolate Covered Strawberry ice cream cake
-Two layers of our strawberries and cream ice cream separated by chocolate crunch and fudge, and then topped with a chocolate icing and a chocolate covered strawberry.

We’re going to handle this special sale a little differently, You can order any flavor you like, as much as you like. If you want three pints of one flavor and none of another, no problem.

Place your order between now and January 24th, we’ll custom make and assemble your order to be ready for pick up on our designated pick-up days.

2015 Christmas flavors for sale now!

2015 Christmas flavors for sale now!

We've been planning this year's Christmas flavor sale since, well actually, last Christmas.

This year's flavors are absolutely off the hook, if we do say so ourselves. We're really excited to announce our 2015 holiday pack flavors.

Flavor #1 –Yule Log
Of course, the first flavor I list is the one that might be over the top. Every year, my family has a traditional Yule Log at Christmas. If you’ve never had one, I always thought of it as kind of a giant Hostess Ho-Ho. This ice cream is our take on that traditional dessert: chocolate cake batter ice cream, swirled with chocolate and blended with chocolate brownies chunks, vanilla pound cake pieces and chocolate flake. Like I said, over the top.

Flavor #2 –Oakes Riesling, Pear and Toasted Macadamia Nut
Wait until you try this one. We created an ice cream built around a Riesling, and the result is one of the best wine ice creams we have ever made. We infused the cream with Leonard Oakes Petillant Naturel Riesling, added a hint of pear and then blended roasted and salted macadamia nuts throughout.

Flavor #3 –Christmas Jingle
We plucked this one right out of our childhood. If your home is anything like ours, we start buying Jingle cookies sometime before Thanksgiving and eat them through the entire holiday season. I can’t tell you all the times I remember playing video games next to a bowl of jingles as a kid. So, to do them justice in an ice cream, we created an ultra rich sweet cream ice cream and packed it with crushed Jingle cookies. Last, we and topped it with colorful decorative sugar crystals just like on the iconic cookie.

Flavor #4 –Butterbeer
We've tested this flavor for months and are glad to announce that we finally finished our final ice cream recipe in time for Christmas. Harry Potter fans rejoice, we have created Butterbeer ice cream. We researched the ingredients and converted them to a creamy and rich Butterbeer flavor. We even top each pint with a vanilla cream “head” just like on a frosty pint. Mischief managed.

For those of you who've never participated in the holiday flavor sale here is how it works:

Our holiday packs will include one pint each of our holiday flavors, wrapped in colored tissue paper and packed in a white box. We include one of our Lake Effect free cone wooden nickels in each gift box. Also, again this year, we will place a “golden ticket” in TWO of our gift boxes that will allow the lucky finder of the ticket to create an ice cream flavor of their own with Jason and Erik.

The gift boxes are $25.00 plus tax each and only available through pre-order at this link...

http://mkt.com/lakeeffecticecream

You will be able to pre-order them ONLY until midnight on December 5th .

After your order is complete, we will then custom make all of your ice cream and have our staff at our shop for the following three dates for you to come in and pick up your gift boxes.

-Friday, December 18th from 4-8pm
-Saturday, December 19th from 9-3pm
-Sunday, December 20th from 9-3pm

Stop down to our shop on any of those days and pick up your pre-order just in time for the holiday season. Please be sure to bring your receipt so we can help get you back on your way as quickly as possible. We will not be shipping any holiday gift packs, as they are pick-up only.

We will also have our “one free cone” wooden nickels and gift certificates available at our shop on all three of the pick up days.

Let the holiday season begin.

Shop closed for the season

Shop closed for the season

It never really feels like the shop is officially closed for the season until the pint sale is over. When that feeling is finally here, it catches me off guard every time.

First comes the relief that we made it through another season successfully; knowing that everything went well and Lake Effect continues to grow and be a part of our WNY community.

The weirdest part of closing, however, is that the moment I close that front door I automatically start thinking about what we're going to do next year. What new flavors will we make? What new things we can sponsor and support? Knowing that the day-to-day responsibilities of the shop are going to be gone for a little while let's the creativity really open up for next year.

Maybe it's just the way I am wired, being a teacher, but being able to step away for a little bit is one of the best things about owning a seasonal business. We have time to recharge our batteries and plan great new things for the spring.

Don't worry, we still sell pints all year throughout WNY and we'll have our annual Christmas ice cream sale in December (we'll announce the Christmas flavors next week). We even have a few more off-season surprises that we'll announce soon.

Thank you to everyone who enjoyed a little ice cream with us this year. We'll see you again soon.
